Breaking Down Barriers, Independent Living Resource Centre; promoting a new perspective on disability.
To celebrate Canada’s 150th Birthday Eh! Our members have been busy beavers themselves creating a commemorative project to raise funds for their growing programs. This has been a fun filled project for everyone going on social nature walks to collect pine cones and working together as a team to assemble them. This truly is art therapy at its best! We invite you to show your support with a donation when you see our members in the community promoting their Breaking Down Barriers Beavers! hey have been showcased at the Move Collingwood and our members will be at the Farmer’s Market promoting them as well. Thanks!
The goal was to empower and engage our members to grant them more opportunities to network and let people know what our Centre is all about and who we serve. This project also gave each of them a sense of purpose.
“I think it was wonderful and it gave us volunteers an opportunity to say hi to the public. I think we should do this more often to show that we are here and to show what the consumers at breaking down barriers can do and what we are all about; we are all about trying to help others too, to help themselves to be better people in the community as we work in the community it teaches us a lot and helps us to be more confident as it does me. I feel confident when I'm out there talking and sharing what I know about breaking down barriers. I'm not afraid to talk about it. I'm not afraid to tell people what our office is all about. I am a consumer and a volunteer and love what I do and love the people I work for they deserve a lot of credit for what they do for us and we are proud of them for what they do I'm proud of all the other consumers that have participated keep up the good work let's do it again let's go out there in the community let's try to do our best to show what we are and that people could learn more about us” Mary Weldon, Member, Consumer and Volunteer, Breaking Down Barriers, ILRC
